Aside from tracking one of the 10 habituated gorilla families other excursions include visits to the local Iby’wacu village, the twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo, the lava tunnels of the Musanze Caves, Dian Fossey’s grave (made famous by the film ‘Gorillas in the mist’) and trekking to see the critically endangered Golden Monkey. There are also birding walks available on the grounds and participation in the reforestation program is encouraged.
Each of the stylishly designed luxurious Forest Villas are discreetly and privately situated in the folds of the hills and each has its own unique view. The altitude of the lodge is approximately 7,000 feet above sea level so the climate is generally cool and the volcanoes rise to a height of almost 15,000 feet.
The main area of the lodge is equally stylish with a large lounge, bar and dining area with extensive outdoor decks from which guests can enjoy the spectacular views. The accommodation comprises six luxurious Forest Villas, each designed to mimic the nests of the Mountain gorilla and furnished to the highest standards with a large lounge area, sumptuous en-suite bathroom, bedroom with king size bed and a full length veranda.
