Location
Fugitives Drift Lodge is set in a fine position overlooking Isandlwana and Rorkes Drift and is surrounded by a 4,000-acre National Heritage site along the Buffalo River. Here you feel you are at the very heart of Zulu land and as you explore the estate you sometimes come across giraffe, antelope and other creatures.
Accommodation
Each of the spacious lodge cottages are comfortable and traditionally furnished, while the large lounge and dining room house a substantial library with relics and memorabilia of the Zulu Wars. Beautiful gardens provide an oasis in between tours, and the swimming pool overlooking the Buffalo River is the perfect place to cool off at the end of the day.
Experiences
The specialist guides take guests to the very site of Rorke’s Drift and Isandlwana battles, and they give thrilling and quite emotional accounts of the course of the battles and the personalities involved bringing the events to life, as you stand beside the Rorke’s Drift mission house looking down towards the river and the old hill by Isandlwana in the distance.
Fugitives Drift is the perfect place for a family adventure: while parents will enjoy traditional battlefield tours, for kids there are plenty of ways to bring history to life, from gruesome accounts to the chance to hold a rifle used by the British at Rorke’s Drift.

Community
Having established Fugitive’s Drift Lodge, the lodge’s owners: David and Nicky recognised the desperate need in the surrounding rural communities of Rorke’s Drift and Isandlwana where most families live below the poverty line. The David Rattray Foundation was established to focus on supporting and improving the education of children in the local rural communities.
Conservation
A levy for each stay at Fugitives Drift contributes towards the preservation of the Fugitives Drift Game Reserve, enabling the protection of the precious flora and fauna that exists here for future generations to enjoy.
Community
The David Rattray Foundation concentrates on four main areas: early childhood development, curriculum support interventions for teachers and principals, maths and English education and life skills development and job readiness.
