East Africa - Safari Honeymoon at La Digue Island and the Masai Mara's Elephant Pepper Camp.

Day 1

Depart at 2105 from London's Heathrow Airport on the Air Seychelles flight HM001 to Mahe.

Days 2 to 7

On arrival at 1100 you will be met and assisted aboard a helicopter shuttle taking you to La Digue Island where you stay for six nights at the Island Lodge in an Aframe beachfront chalet (half board). The beautiful granite island of La Digue is surrounded by magnificent white sand beaches, which are the very essence of the tropical paradise known as the Seychelles Islands. Usually reached by a thirty minute ferry boat ride from the neighbouring island of Praslin, it is nowadays possible to fly directly to La Digue on a recently established helicopter shuttle from the main island of Mahe. The exquisite scenery combines the sparkling turquoise Indian Ocean with icing sugar beaches and the verdant greenery dotted with coconut palms. Strewn in a haphazard fashion along the beaches are ancient granite rocks of enormous size and unique shapes making La Digue one of the most photographed of all the islands in the Seychelles archipelago. On the island is a wonderful century-old small church and a working plantation where you can watch the gathering and processing of coconuts or enjoy the evocative perfume of vanilla pods.

Life on La Digue is a slow, unstressed affair with the main method of transport being oxcarts or bicycles and indeed to cycle around the island is one of the very best ways to explore your island paradise! For the more adventurous, who don't want to spend the whole holiday on the beach, there are numerous tracks and footpaths to follow leading you through tropical forest and the undergrowth of an amazing botanical world La Digue Island Lodge is the result of several small hotels amalgamating and this has created in a variety of accommodation styles. The delightful open air restaurant with a sand floor specialises in Creole and International dishes and the lodge now boasts a large swimming pool with pool-bar and snack-bar.

Located at Anse La Reunion at the edge of the village of La Passe, the accommodation comprises: A-frame style chalets both in the gardens and on the beach made of local hardwoods with a large bedroom, beach rondavals which are older yet quite quaint circular bungalows on the beach, and several suites which are also located on the beach. All rooms have air conditioning, minibar, telephone, television, tea and coffee making facilities and an en suite bath and shower (rondavals have shower only).

Charming and attentive service characterises this tranquil island which is perfect asa romantic hideaway!

Day 8

You will be met and transferred by a helicopter shuttle to Mahe Airport where you board the Kenya Airways flight KQ451 departing at 1400 to Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta Airport. On arrival at 1620 you will be met and transferred to Macusala House where you stay for one night (bed and breakfast). Macushla is approximately twenty-five minutes from Nairobi City and forty-five minutes from the international airport. A low rambling property with an attractive garden that is surrounded by indigenous forest, Macushla accommodates a maximum of ten guests in delightful large and airy rooms with open beamed ceilings. The sitting room area has lovely log fires and the standard of cuisine is superb.

Within walking distance of Macushla is the Giraffe Centre, which is well worth a visit. The owner of the lodge, Carry Henken, will happily arrange for you to visit other points of interest in and around Nairobi.

To cool off there is an attractive terrace and small swimming pool. Warm hospitalityis a hallmark of Macushla House.

Days 9 to 12

In the morning you will be met and transferred to Nairobi's Wilson Airport to board a scheduled flight departing at 1000 to the Mara. On arrival at 1045 you will be met and transferred to Elephant Pepper Camp where you stay for four nights in a honeymoon tent (fully inclusive of meals and activities). Elephant Pepper Camp is a step back in time but with modern comforts: evenings by the campfire and dinner under the stars are a special feature of this tented camp. This is an original bush camp, eco-friendly, committed to finding a way of life that does not harm the wilderness and revenue from the camp goes back to the local community. The Elephant Pepper Camp is put up for the season and then packed away to leave no trace behind. The homely atmosphere of this camp is part of its charm. Guests can relax with nature, no generators, no vehicles passing, no permanent structures jarring the skyline, just the sights and sounds of the bush which completely surround you.

Situated right on the northern edge of the Masai Mara Reserve, Elephant Pepper Camp (formerly known as Mara Bush Camp) is tucked away in a prime wildlife area surrounded by the Mara's ubiquitous game. The camp has eight large and spacious light canvas tents with en suite dressing rooms, safari showers filled with hot water on request, and flush toilets.

Looking from camp across the plains one can see the 'greatest game show on earth' when the annual wildebeest migration thunders past to seek new grazing in the lush savannahs of the Maasai Mara.

Walking with qualified guides and unwinding around the glowing embers of a campfire all add to the authenticity of a true bush experience, together with game drives both during the day and at night time.

The rich grasslands and watering places in the Masai Mara sustain very large numbers of plains game including thousands of elephant, graceful-looking giraffe and big herds of buffalo. There are also zebra, wildebeest and a host of smaller creatures such as baboon, warthog and jackal. There are great herds of antelope, which range from the diminutive topi to majestic-looking kudu. The Masai Mara is also a particularly good place to see predators and big prides of lion compete with leopard and cheetah for food and territory. From July to September the annual migration of over a million wildebeest and zebra passes through the Masai Mara creating one of the world's greatest wildlife spectaculars with seemingly endless lines of wildebeest strung out as far as the eye can see across the plains. Each of the ten spacious double tents has a verandah and is fly-screened to prevent intrusion of insects. Each tent contains beds, bedding, towels, wash stands, chairs, tables, water jug (with fresh drinking water and glasses), baggage stands, coat hangers and torches. There are en suite shower and toilet facilities and hot water is available when required. There is a well-sited fully equipped mess/dining tent with fly-screened sides.

Day 13

In the afternoon you will be transferred to the airstrip to board a scheduled flight departing at 1600 to Nairobi's Wilson Airport. On arrival at 1715 you will be met and taken to a city hotel for dinner (by own account) before your evening transfer to the airport.

Depart at 2350 on flight KQ102 to London's Heathrow Airport.

Day 14

Arrive at 0545 (local time).
