Fly Camp with a Camel

Fly camping with camels in Kenya as featured in the Independent

Day 1
Depart at 1900 from London's Heathrow Airport on Kenya Airways flight KQ101 to Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

Days 2 and 3
Arrive at 0630 and transfer to Nairobi's Wilson Airport to board a scheduled flight departing at 0915 to Nanyuki. On arrival you will be met and assisted onto a private light aircraft charter (Cessna 182) taking you to Sabuk Lodge, staying for your first night at the main lodge and your second night fly camping (fully inclusive of meals and activities).

Sabuk Lodge is in a stunning wilderness destination. The lodge is perched on the high banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River in the Northern Frontier District, overlooking the Laikipia Plateau and Samburu land.

The lodge has 5 rondavels (open sided cottages) with verandah, shower and toilet, each with its own fabulous view. Sabuk was fashioned out of the local landscape, built with local materials, the hillside, flora, twisted wood and stone boulders incorporated into the architecture. Open walls and private verandahs face out over the river gorge 150ft below. This hilly area with dense acacia bush is host to a lot of game which varies according to the season: Greater Kudu, reticulated Giraffe, Buffalo, Impala, Elephant, Warthog, Klipspringer, Zebra, Eland, DikDik, Waterbuck, Lion, Leopard, good bird watching and incredible scenery.

Sabuk Lodge goes out of its way to make guests welcome and in addition to game drives in 4x4 vehicles, you can also enjoy guided nature walks, line fishing, swimming in the river and bird watching.

On Day 2 you will have the opportunity to walk with a professional safari guide and a team of trained Laikipiak Maasai warriors, passing through completely deserted tracts of wilderness: no other tourists, no roads or vehicles, only wildlife and their tracks, breathtaking scenery, the sounds of the bush, just Africa. Overnight a small fly camp will be set up in a beautiful spot where you can enjoy dinner under the stars with the sounds of Africa around you.

Day 4
In the morning you return by private light aircraft charter (Cessna 182) to Nanyuki, arriving in time to connect with a scheduled flight departing at 1130 to Wilson. On arrival at 1215 you will be met and taken by road to the House of Waine where a day room will be made available for you (room only). You may wish to take an early dinner (for own account) before your evening transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

You will be transferred to the airport where you board flight KQ102 departing at 2350 to London's Heathrow Airport, arriving the following morning at 0545 (local time).
